Court challenge: Constitution says that PM must call for by-election when seat is vacated
Home / 2018 » January » 19
Dr Wong Souk Yee's application for a mandatory court order for a by-election at the Mar-Yew Tee GRC relies primarily on Article 49(1) of the Constitution: “Whenever the seat of a Member, not being a non-constituency Member, has become vacant for any reason other than a dissolution of Parliament, the vacancy SHALL be filled by election...” (emphasis added)
The matter will be heard in the High Court next Mon, 22 Jan, at 2:30 pm.

SDP Walkabout on last Sunday morning (21 January 2018)
SDP pressing on with our walkabout today (on 21 January 2018) at Bt Panjang and Bt Timah. Meeting with residents and selling our newspaper The New Democrat. We had a great time meeting everyone and keeping in touch with our fellow Singaporeans.
PAP should honor the very Constitution they "wrote". Gone are the days when they are brave enough to call a byelection like that one in MacPherson.
Good to see him still around... he provides "credibility" to SDP.
Come and have a great time tomorrow

Spot the difference
What about the cringe-inducing boast that they are exceptional leaders? The thing is, exceptional leaders don't have to change the rules to reserve elections for their candidate or introduce the GRC system so that they don't have to call for by-elections or detain without trial their opponents or outlaw protests of even one person or control the media so that they are less free than even the ones in Ethiopia and Sudan.
As for the social compact the PAP struck with the people – it died long ago. The idea that the people give up their political rights in exchange for the good life is as real as the Easter bunny (or our exceptional PAP leadership).

Had a rollicking time at the Kook-Off today (on 28 Jan 2018).
Wonderful to see good ol' friends again and, best of all, saw many new faces.
Delightful company, glorious food, fantastical face-painting, great entertainment...
Thanks, everybody, for making it so much fun!
Thanks also to the organising committee, headed by Dr Wong Souk Yee, for all the hard work.
Also had the pleasure of meeting the Hon. Chen Show Mao, MP for Aljunied GRC.
He looks fresh and raring to go.
The New Paper reported today that Education Minister and 2nd Def Min Ong Ye Kung was recently in Finland and marveled at the country's level of trust and social cohesion.
“In Finland, the trust among its people is so powerful that they can even look up each other's tax returns online, and traffic fines are calculated as a proportion of the motorist's income.”
This deep connection among the Finnish people, he says, is the “most crucial form of defence in peacetime: psychological defence”. It forms the “bedrock of social cohesion and psychological resilience” of the country.
What he doesn't say - or know - is that the cohesion and trust are forged from an open and democratic society where the Finns elect a govt out of confidence and with the clear knowledge that whoever is elected serves the entire country, ie, the govt is accountable to all.
The Finnish electorate doesn't vote out of fear of not getting their flats upgraded or somehow being victimised by a spiteful ruling clique. They also don't have to contend with their rulers changing the rules to ensure that their candidates get 'elected'. They also have a free press.
On the World Electoral Freedom Index, Finland ranks no. 4, Singapore 173. In the World Press Freedom Index, Finland is no. 3, Singapore 151.
Research also shows that trust is better fostered in a more equal society. Finland has the smallest income inequality in the wold (Gini: 21.5), Singapore one of the highest (Gini: 45.8).
Does Ong know all this? If he doesn't, he has no right being a minister or, worse, PM. If he does, he is telling us that he possesses not the courage to openly push for change within his party. Either way, Singapore pays.
Ms Neo Swee Lin and Mr Lim Kay Siu livening up an already fun-filled party. Who said the Opposition cannot attract talent? Thanks Swee Lin and Kay Siu
