WASHINGTON: The White House on Wednesday (May 16) voiced hope the upcoming summit between North Korea's Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump will proceed as planned, as Pyongyang threatened to pull out over US pressure for "unilateral nuclear abandonment."

The comments from the North about the meeting, set for Jun 12 in Singapore, were the first sign of a hiccup after weeks of tentative rapprochement.

"We're still hopeful that the meeting will take place and we'll continue down that path," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told Fox News. "At the same time ... we've been prepared that these might be tough negotiations."

"The president is ready if the meeting takes place. And if it doesn't, we will continue the maximum pressure campaign that has been ongoing."

In an angrily worded statement, the North warned on Wednesday it may back out of the high-level summit if the United States pressures it to give up its nuclear arsenal.

"If the US is trying to drive us into a corner to force our unilateral nuclear abandonment, we will no longer be interested in such dialogue," first vice foreign minister Kim Kye Gwan said in a statement carried by state media.

called for the summit to go ahead.

"The situation on the peninsula has eased up, which is worth cherishing," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular briefing.

Minister Kim also dismissed offers by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for US economic aid if the North denuclearizes.

"We have never had any expectation of US support in carrying out our economic construction and will not at all make such a deal in future," he said.

    TIGHTROPE DIPLOMACY

The North Korean warning follows a weeks-long charm offensive that has seen Kim Jong Un hold a historic summit with the South's president and meet twice with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Pyongyang also raised hopes ahead of the US summit by announcing it will destroy its nuclear testing site next week.

Analysts said Pyongyang appeared to be trying to redefine the terms of the debate.

"It's a diplomatic tactic," Kim Hyun-wook, professor at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, told AFP, calling it "brinkmanship to change the US position."

"It looks like Kim Jong Un was pushed into accepting US demands for 'denuclearization-first' but is now trying to change its position after normalizing North Korea-China relations and securing economic assistance," he added.

"The classic North Korean tightrope diplomacy between the US and China has begun."

US officials have repeatedly claimed credit for Washington's "maximum pressure" policy for bringing Pyongyang to the negotiating table.

Joshua Pollack of the Middlebury Institute for International Studies said Pyongyang had been irritated by the "triumphalist tone."

"The North Koreans aren't happy with what they're seeing and hearing," he said. "There is still a yawning gulf between expectations for diplomacy in Pyongyang and Washington, DC."

    THUNDERSTRUCK

KCNA also denounced the Max Thunder joint military exercises being held between the US and South Korea as a "rude and wicked provocation," and Seoul said it had received a message cancelling planned high-level talks "indefinitely."

The two-week drills started last Friday and involves some 100 aircraft from the two allies, including F-22 stealth fighter jets.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters it had received "no notification" of a position change by North Korea on next month's meeting.

The exercises were "not provocative" and would continue, she added.

Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement casts serious doubts over Washington's role in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula.
It poses the question of how Washington can possibly be trusted to keep its word when it comes to guaranteeing North Korea's security if it proceeds with denuclearization and the dismantlement of its nuclear development program. For as any serious student of US history knows, trusting Washington to keep its word is akin to trusting a crocodile not to close its jaws upon putting your head in its mouth.

With this history of mendacity and duplicity in mind, the recent photo op involving US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un – shaking hands and smiling at the camera – calls to mind Shakespeare's admonition: "False face must hide what the false heart doth know."

Don't believe me? Just ask Native American Indian Chief Red Eagle.

[IMG] 'Our country is not Libya or Iraq': N. Korea may reconsider Trump-Kim summit if guaranteed safety
In her landmark book on the shameful history of Indian Removals, 'The Trail of Tears,' Gloria Jahoda recounts a meeting that took place between Red Eagle and US General and future President Andrew Jackson in 1813. It occurred in the aftermath of the futile attempt by Red Eagle and his people to halt the westward expansion of white European settlers into their lands.

After a hard fought struggle against overwhelming odds in which hundreds of his warriors were killed, and desperate to save his tribe's women and children, Red Eagle arrived at Jackson's headquarters to offer himself up in surrender. According to Jahoda, despite shaking hands with his Indian counterpart and guaranteeing the safety of his people and their right to remain in peace on their own land, Andrew Jackson was convinced that "America's frontiers would always be frontiers while there were Indians to annoy the settlers. The Indians must go." Thus Jackson "silently pledged to himself to the policy of Indian Removal which in his presidency was to become law. It would be a simple law: any Indian who remained on his ancestral lands affirming his Indian identity would be a criminal."

The burning question is whether 2018 is a re-run of 1813, with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the role of Andrew Jackson and Kim Jong-un a latter day Red Eagle; with the former providing assurances to the latter that neither he nor the government he represents has any intention of fulfilling?

Just how much trust can the North Koreans place in the word or an administration which at the same time it is pledging to guarantee their security in return for denuclearization, is unilaterally withdrawing from a treaty its predecessor made with Iran in conjunctions with the other five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany over its nuclear development program?

History is the best teacher and never more than now, crucial for a world interested in stability and peace when it comes to understanding the nature of what it is dealing with in Washington.

[IMG] Gorbachev WAS promised NATO would not expand east – declassified docs
Just in case anyone is under any illusions in this respect, US author William Blum in his classic book 'Rogue State,' described in the subtitle as "a guide to the world's only superpower," lays it out: "The leaders of the United States strive for world domination, for hegemony wherever possible; this had been their main occupation for over a century, it's what they do for a living."

He goes on: "The United States, NATO and the European Union form a Holy Triumvirate. The Holy Triumvirate has subsidiaries, chiefly the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and International Criminal Court. All help to keep in line those governments lacking the Holy Triumvirate seal of approval."

Another leader with hard experience of Washington's duplicity and perfidy is Mikhail Gorbachev, hailed for his role in ending the first Cold War, though in the process unable to save the Soviet Union.

Based on declassified documents, a 2017 report by the Washington-based independent research institute, the National Security Archive, confirms that during negotiations with the Soviet government, led by Gorbachev and undertaken as part of the process of bringing the Cold War to an end, categorical assurances were given by Western governments, led by Washington, that upon the reunification of Germany there would be no attempt to expand NATO eastward towards Russia's borders.

In fact, a "cascade of assurances" was given to the Soviets, with then-US Secretary of State James Baker going as far as to pledge that NATO would expand "not one inch eastward" in a meeting with Gorbachev on February 9, 1990. It was only as a result of these assurances that the Soviet leadership was prepared to accept German reunification, given its security ramifications in a period of political turmoil.

Returning to the Trump administration's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, the decision, clearly, was taken at the behest of a fundamentalist neocon foreign policy establishment in Washington in conjunction with US regional allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Thus the security of the American people and stability of the Middle East has been sacrificed on the altar of a hegemonic agenda that can only sound a warning in Pyongyang that Washington's objective is not peace with North Korea but the country's surrender.

[IMG] Bolton wants all of North Korea’s nukes shipped to US in exchange for ‘security assurances’
Further proof is the demand issued by Trump's notorious national security adviser, John Bolton, that the North Koreans must ship all their nuclear weapons to the US in return for assurances on their security and a relaxation of US sanctions. Such a move by the North Koreans would be folly, tantamount to placing themselves at the mercy of a neocon Taliban.

Washington's role in any process of peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula can, ultimately, only be an impediment to its chances of success. If it is to succeed, then Washington must be excluded, requiring that the South Koreans step forward as an independent state and refuse to accept any longer its status as a US satellite. The Trump administration's demand that Pyongyang dismantle its nuclear deterrent as a precondition for peace and reconciliation is an impertinence that should be treated with the contempt it deserves. If there is to be a precondition, it should be a joint one on the part of the North and South Korean governments, demanding the departure of US troops and military installations from the peninsula.

Whatever happens, none should forget the price paid by Red Eagle and his people for trusting the assurances of Washington: We were told that they wished merely to pass through our country… to seek for gold in the far west… Yet before the ashes of the council are cold, the Great Father is building his forts among us… His presence here is… an insult to the spirits of our ancestors. Are we then to give up their sacred graves to be allowed for corn?

Why is it important to have NK sold USA's ass to China & Russia is that this 2 big boys can use this as a chip and weapon to give USA nuke threat by NK-Flag or Iran-Flag, not Chinese nor Russian flags.

Because the treaty only works together part #1 & #2, revoking any part automatically revokes both. Meaning USA can not fuck around with China nor Russia e.g. Trade War or Syrian War. Xijinping / Putin can revoke Iran / NK nuke deals, because they are signatory parties, and they can withdraw themselves, make the treaty void.

For example if Dotard go sell weapons to Taiwan, Xi canceled the NK Nuke Treaty, PLA will return all the Hwasong ICBMs & H-Bombs to Kim Jong Nuke instantly, Dotard can be nuke at Kim's pleasure. He and his Golden Shower Rohingya Prize turn into Mushroom Cloud. Nothing is within his total control. No suka suka at his pleasure. Putin & Xi will welcome my suggestion. NK & Iran will welcome too. Give Dotard zero alternative ways out.

    [IMG]
Korea Central News Agency, via Agence France-Presse — Getty Images

North Korea's "face change" is too sudden? In fact, it is always routine

    Yes, even dictators will flinch.

A source said on Wednesday that North Korea is considering a plan to cancel Kim Jung-un’s June meeting with President Trump. This reflects a routine of this unpredictable regime: diplomacy is good, followed by capricious behavior, and then in many cases flatly rejects the peace proposal.

Here are some other precedents for North Korea suddenly changing face:

    Six-party talks hope to burst

After exiting the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, North Korea agreed to hold six-nation talks with the United States and other major regional powers, and in 2005 promised to "relinquish nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programs." But the following year, North Korea conducted its first nuclear test.

By 2009, Pyongyang said that it would permanently withdraw from nuclear disarmament negotiations and restart its nuclear program and deported United Nations inspectors.

    Rejecting Washington’s show of disdain

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, US President George W. Bush announced North Korea, Iraq, and Iran as part of the "axis of evil," but at the end of Bush’s term of office, his Your advisory position has softened.

In 2008, Washington removed North Korea from the list of countries supporting terrorism and agreed to provide North Korea with financial assistance in exchange for the disclosure and shutdown of nuclear facilities in Pyongyang. However, in December, the agreement broke down because North Korea refused to approve a system to check whether it complied with the agreement.

    Reject Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama’s policy toward North Korea includes steadily increasing economic pressure while allowing U.S. diplomats to meet secretly with North Korean counterparts.

This led to an agreement announced in February 2012. Under the agreement, North Korea will stop the operation of the Yongbyon nuclear reactor and allow inspectors to verify that it has stopped its nuclear weapons and missile programs. In return, the United States promised to provide North Korea with food aid. The agreement fueled the hopes of the outside world that Kim Jong-un, who had just been the leader of North Korea at that time, was willing to cooperate with the West to ease the tension.

However, within a month, North Korea threatened to launch a satellite, resulting in the breakdown of the agreement.

    The band is cool

In 2015, Kim Jong-un's favorite pop band, the Moranbong Band, was granted permission to go to China for the first overseas performance. The orchestra is known for its singers wearing tight skirts and high heels to perform western popular songs and classic Korean repertoire. According to reports, about 20 members of the orchestra were personally selected by Kim Jong-un.

But a few hours before the show began, the orchestra suddenly left Beijing. North Korea did not explain the reason. This incident has strengthened the outside world’s perception of North Korea’s young leader’s disposition.

    Rugged Olympic Harmonious Road

Kim Jong-un’s latest diplomacy showed off during the Korean Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February this year. However, the road to rapprochement with its old enemy, South Korea, has been bumpy.

A few weeks before the opening of the Olympic Games, North Korea cancelled a cultural event that was originally scheduled to be held in conjunction with South Korean pop bands and attributed it to South Korea’s “insulting” news coverage of its participation in the Winter Olympics.

[New head shell newtalk] According to the news released by North Korea News Agency this morning, the first enlarged meeting of the 7th Central Military Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea was held in Pyongyang, and the top leader Kim Jong-un pointed out in his speech that the entire army must be “invincible”. Guns to defend North Korea. It is worth noting that this is the latest reference to Kim Jong-un’s weapons on defending North Korea — not “invincible nuclear weapons” or “invincible nuclear missiles”.

From nuclear weapons/missiles to guns  the reference has changed "data-reactid="19">from nuclear weapons/missiles to guns

This is the first time that the North Korean Workers Party has held the enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission since the 7th National Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea The original is like this:

At the enlarged meeting, Kim Jong-un analyzed and summed up the situation of the People's Army after completing the 7th congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea and completed the military-political mission. It also pointed out the establishment of a revolutionary army that further established the party’s only leader system for the revolutionary armed forces. Feng, always adhered to the Party's principle of training revolutionary ideology, the principle of revolution, military modernization policy, and the improvement of military life issues such as the basic direction and approach of army building and military activities.

Kim Jong-un emphasized that the entire army must firmly defend and reliably ensure the implementation of the national struggle for the resolutions of the Third Plenary Session of the Seventh Central Committee of the Seventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of Korea with invincible guns.

Kim Jong-un spoke highly of the slogan of the People's Army holding high the "defend the motherland and build socialism must be packaged by us!" and fulfill its duty as a revolutionary vanguard and fresh force in the main theater of socialist economic construction and expressed its expectation and belief. It will continue to adhere to the revolutionary nature and character of the army as a party and leader, and outstandingly accomplish the sacred mission and mission entrusted by the motherland and its people.

Kim Jong-un is angry that the United States is not sincere  invincible" data-reactid="24"> Kim Jong-un is angry that the United States is not sincere

According to the analysis of the “Beijing Daily” WeChat Public’s Governor Chang’an Street, in fact, the situation in the peninsula seems to have been fluctuating in recent times. At the end of April not long ago, Kim Jong-un has historically crossed the 38th parallel, and the South Korean President Wen Zai’s dialogue has been aroused. Subsequently, the leaders of the United States and North Korea also released goodwill across the air, and confirmed that the North Korea-US Summit will be held in Singapore on June 12.

Could be clinched, just in the past two weeks, on the 16th, North Korea announced that because of the apparent hostility of the ROK-US military against North Korea, it cancelled the North-South high-level talks scheduled on the day of the original plan and warned the United States that it should also cope with the fate of the DPRK-US summit on its agenda. Think again.

"North Korea is angry that the United States is not sincere and intimidated." Governor Chang An Street pointed out that the United States seems to be backing its Libya-dominated nuclear abandonment model, that is, after Gadaffer’s surrender of all nuclear weapons, it took only 8 years, the United States led the West. The state overthrew this regime. "This kind of sincerity will surely be unacceptable to anyone."

One day before Kim Jong-un’s stated position, Li Shanquan, chairman of the North Korean National Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the People’s Republic of China, issued a statement. He said that as long as the serious situation that caused the suspension of high-level North-South talks is not resolved, it will be difficult to re-sit with South Korea.

The North Korean high official remarks are very clear: North Korea’s position is clear and unchanging, and the direction of North-South relations in the future depends entirely on the actions of South Korea. “Clouds are naturally sunny and blue.”

Fanfare and the United States military exercise  South Korea has the word "data-reactid="30"> Fighting with the United States military exercise

Now North Korea’s considerations are very simple. “We have made very significant concessions. South Korea and the United States are still making great military exercises and are too deceitful!”

However, the governor of Chang’an Street believes that in fact, South Korea is also suffering. It was also yesterday that the South Korean National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee held a plenary meeting. Foreign Minister Kang Jing made a clear statement and trusted Kim Jong-un to abandon his nuclear pledge. North Korea and the United States only differed in their methods of abandoning their nuclear weapons.

At that time, some Members asked Kang Jinghe whether he believed North Korea’s State Council Chairman Jin Zhengen and Kang Jinghe had hesitated for a moment before making a positive reply. When the Member asked whether he believed North Korea’s complete denuclearization commitment, she answered, "Unlike previous times, this time the top North Korean leader embarked on a trip to South Korea to clarify the determination of denuclearization at the talks with the South Korean President. Of course, (nuclearization) needs to be verified, but we have not fallen into excessive optimism. There are unrealistic illusions."

Abandoned nuclear weapons "data-reactid="34"> Storage nuclear weapons VS. Abandoned nuclear weapons

When asked by Members how to treat the U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo, the so-called U.S.-DPRK talks may have to be satisfied with “storing nuclear weapons” rather than “discarded nuclear weapons.” Kang Jinghe replied that South Korea and the United States have urged the DPRK to “completely dismantle nuclear weapons.” A common goal is unwavering.

Kang Jinghe believes that the two expressions of permanent, verifiable, irreversible, denuclearization (PVID) and complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization (CVID) are only the strength of the tone, which ultimately means the same thing. She commented that for a nuclear project, dismantling a nuclear test site is far more significant than (in the past) blowing up a cooling tower.

The governor of Chang'an Street said that the above question and answer clearly felt that the taste of South Korea sandwiched between the United States and North Korea was unfavorable. It is an indisputable fact that South Korean personnel cannot help themselves, and the dominant power is still in the hands of the United States.

The DPRK-US summit stricken  The U.S. did not try to repair  without giving in "data-reactid="38">The DPRK Summit slammed the U.S. did not attempt to repair without retreat

"Meetings can be accomplished. If we don't succeed, we will proceed to the next step." This is what President Trump put on last night...

The analysis pointed out that the DPRK and US summits have jeopardized, and the United States has not shown any attempt to make repairs. The result was erroneous and regrettable. On the contrary, Trump calling Kim Jong-un as “crazy rocket man” said, “The above statement makes people wonder whether it is Who is arrogant?"

After the U.S. president’s remarks, White House spokeswoman Saunders came forward to “fire.” She said that the United States and North Korea are preparing for the summit as originally planned, and North Korea has not put forward any notice that it may cancel the talks. The time and place of the summit between the United States and North Korea did not change, "at least for the moment, there is no change in the United States."

Poton, the country’s national security affairs assistant to the real players of the DPRK’s talks, gave the United States’ true thoughts: Preparations for the DPRK-U.S. summit meeting are continuing. Every effort will be made to ensure that the meeting is held successfully, but it is completely Verifiable, irreversible, CVID goals will not be conceded.

The governor of Chang’an Street stressed that, in fact, this is the crux of the US-North Korea summit: Americans want North Korea to abandon its nuclear program first and then talk about aid. North Korea hopes to establish normal relations while abandoning nuclear programs in stages.

DOOMSDAY BACK ON? Kim SLAMS ‘Ignorant and Incompetent’ South Korea
posted by Hannity Staff - 14 hours ago

North Korean officials directly rebuked South Korea’s offer to help “broker” the high-stakes summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un Thursday; slamming their southern neighbors as “ignorant and incompetent.”

According to the New York Post, the Chairman of North Korea’s Reunification Committee harshly rejected Seoul’s suggestion that South Korea help “mediate” the upcoming meeting between US and Korean officials.

“On this opportunity, the present south Korean authorities have been clearly proven to be an ignorant and incompetent group devoid of the elementary sense of the present situation,” said a written statement from Chairman Ri Son Gwon.

“Unless the serious situation which led to the suspension of the north-south high-level talks is settled, it will never be easy to sit face to face again with the present regime of south Korea,” it added.

North Korean officials suddenly cut-off communications with South Korea and threatened to withdraw from the upcoming summit earlier this week; accusing the United States of practicing “invasion” drills during a joint military exercise.

(CNN)US President Donald Trump suggested Thursday Beijing could be behind North Korea's recent harsh rhetoric against Washington in the past week, which has thrown the June summit in Singapore into doubt.

Speaking in the Oval Office, US President Donald Trump appeared to blame Xi for Pyongyang's change of tone, which included threatening to call off the talks if the US insisted on unilateral denuclearization.
"It could very well be that he's influencing Kim Jong Un," Trump said, adding Kim's apparent change of heart had begun after his recent meeting with Xi in the northern Chinese town of Dalian.
China has mixed feelings about a closer relationship between North Korea and the United States, experts say, and wants any agreement struck between Pyongyang and Washington to ensure Beijing is still the powerbroker in the region.
"They want to make sure that whatever potential relationship could come from the meeting between Trump and Kim doesn't overshadow China's power," Emily Weinstein, researcher at Georgetown's Security Studies Program, told CNN.
But there's no doubt a rising China still wants to see a successful summit in Singapore in June, which could lead to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and peace in the region.
Kim Jong Un holds second meeting with Xi Jinping in China

There has been a clear warming in relations between the two fractious allies in recent months, sparked by concerns in Beijing of being left out of the Korean Peninsula peace process and Pyongyang's desire for a firm ally as it steps on the world stage.
Kim made an unannounced visit to the northern Chinese city of Dalian from May 7, where he met with the Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the trip, the North Korean leader declared the two countries were in "a historical new golden era," according to state media KCNA.
It was Kim's second meeting with Xi after a secret meeting in Beijing in late March, his first journey outside the country since he became leader after his father's death in 2011.
But their blossoming relationship doesn't mean North Korea is beholden to its much bigger neighbor, said John Delury, associate professor at Seoul's Yonsei University.
"There's always a temptation to see North Korea as a pawn in China's game but the North Koreans have their own play here and Kim Jong Un's not just going to do Xi Jinping's (bidding)," he said.

How close are China and North Korea? 02:02
    Close, but not too close
In its first public statements since North Korea said it was reconsidering the Singapore summit, Beijing called for the United States to meet North Korea "halfway."
"What I would like to emphasize is that the present eased tension on the peninsula is hard-won," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during a visit to France, according to China's Foreign Ministry.
Is North Korea trying to get John Bolton fired?

China has been supportive of upcoming talks between Trump and Kim, currently planned to take place in Singapore on June 12.
On Thursday, Xi met with a North Korean delegation of senior officials, saying he supported denuclearization of the peninsula as well as warmer relations between Pyongyang and Washington.
Richard McGregor, senior fellow at Sydney's Lowy Institute, told CNN the perfect outcome of the summit for China would be cordial talks, leading eventually to a peace treaty and calmer Korean Peninsula.
But it wants to ensure the United States doesn't replace China as North Korea's ally of choice, nor does it want a reunified Korea, indebted to Washington, sitting just across its border.
"It's not (about) unification, this is about two separate Koreas which begin to coexist in a much more friendly and cooperative fashion," he said.
    'Decimated"
Preparations for the Trump Kim summit were still going ahead on Friday despite the confusion over the North Korean statements, Trump said on Thursday.
"They've been negotiating like nothing happened," the US President told reporters in the Oval Office.
Trump, still planning summit, reassures and warns Kim Jong Un

Trump attempted to smooth over Kim's concerns about potential regime change by reassuring the young leader that Kim would remain in power even if he abandoned his nuclear weapons, only to then threaten decimation if he didn't.
Trump's suggestion that Beijing may have been to blame for North Korea's recent wavering could have unintended consequences for US China relations, McGregor said.
Chinese Vice Premier Liu He in Washington this week in an attempt to find common ground with the US leader amid ongoing sparring over trade between the two countries.
"Whatever Trump has said about China he's always gone out of his way to praise Xi Jinping, he's always talked about what a terrific guy Xi is and how they have a great relationship and great chemistry," McGregor said.
"So if Trump starts to blame Xi for the potential unraveling of his summit with Kim, that's not good news for US-China relations."
CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this article.

Kim turns Trump tactics on Trump, threatens North Korea summit. Is anyone surprised?

President Donald Trump is trying to assuage North Korean concerns ahead of a potential summit with Kim Jong Un, saying if Kim agrees to denuclearize he will get "protections." (May 17) AP

Summits are called that for a reason. Making it to the top is never certain, as North Korea just showed Donald Trump. He can't wing it with Kim Jong Un.

Let’s not award any Scandinavian peace prizes just yet.

North Korea’s warning that Kim Jong Un might walk away from a planned summit with President Trump next month should come as a surprise to no one — except, perhaps, Trump.

What a shocker. Kim — the dictator of a brutal, murderous, nuclear-armed police state — agrees to something, but then adds preconditions, changes the rules, and threatens to take his toys and go home if he doesn’t get his way. These are all classic Trump tactics, and now Kim’s using them on the master himself. Maybe Rocket Man’s been boning up by reading The Art of the Deal. I’ll bet it’s on his bedside table right now.

Perhaps Kim’s bluffing about walking away, who knows. Fact is, we know next to nothing about him. U.S. officials don't even know how old he is: Various biographies put his birth at anywhere from 1982 to 1984. The one American who has made multiple visits to North Korea, meeting Kim each time, has been unable to offer much in the way of substantive insight.

Would that be CIA chief-turned Secretary of State Mike Pompeo? No, I’m talking about NBA Hall of Famer, Apprentice alum and cross-dressing Trump buddy Dennis Rodman. You know you’re in trouble when you’re planning a life-or-death summit with a guy who's threatening to blow you up, and one of your best sources on that guy wears dresses for kicks and sports rings in his nose.

More: Trump should prepare for North Korea summit like Reagan did for Gorbachev

More: Hold the irrational exuberance on North Korea. Kim is already winning.

Kim’s threat is a reminder that these sorts of events are called “summits” for a reason. Like climbing a mountain, unforeseen hazards can emerge, and making it to the top — the summit — is never a sure thing. Even in circumstances more optimal than we have today, summitry is hard, grueling and complex.

Even when we do know more about the person on the other side of the table, the history of high-stakes summits like this is frankly mixed. Franklin D. Roosevelt, shriveled and dying — he had two months to live — was outmaneuvered by Josef Stalin at Yalta in 1945. John F. Kennedy, new and inexperienced on the job, was bullied by Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna in 1961.

His weakness convinced the Soviet leader that he could get away with putting nuclear missiles in Cuba the next year; the ensuing Cuban Missile Crisis nearly led to nuclear war.

On the other hand, Richard Nixon’s trip to Peking (now called Beijing) in 1972 was a spectacular triumph, opening China to the modern world — a monumental event. Three decades ago, Ronald Reagan was lucky to have, in Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, an adversary who was honest enough to understand that his country was failing and that things needed to change. This, along with the fact that Reagan, a supremely confident man who was dealing from a position of strength, helped end the Cold War without a shot being fired. The most vivid of imaginations could never have dreamed up so fortuitous an outcome.

Trump, who sees everything and everyone in purely transactional terms, is no chess player like Nixon; he has no fixed philosophical orientation like Reagan.

Former secretary of State James Baker often spoke of the “P5” rule: “Prior preparation prevents poor performance.” Trump has long scoffed at such a buttoned-down approach. His supreme self-confidence is such that he typically dispenses with such minutiae as reading up.

"Just get me in the room with the guy (Kim) and I'll figure it out,’" he has reportedly said.

More: President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for North Korea diplomacy

More: North Korea sets a dangerous trap. Disaster is far more likely than a Nobel.

POLICING THE USA: A look at race, justice, media

“Prior preparation prevents poor performance.” That’s great advice. I’ll bet you'd never go into a meeting with your boss, make a presentation at a conference etc. without preparing well ahead of time, trying to anticipate problems, and rehearsing your talking points. Think you can just show up, wing it, and everything will go great? Yet that’s how Trump rolls. And again, we’re not talking about your silly little second-quarter sales report here; we’re talking about nuclear weapons and missiles that could one day wipe out Los Angeles, Chicago or New York.

On top of that, I’m not sure Trump is even wired for this kind of thing. Successful summitry requires each side to give something up to get something in return — a classic win-win outcome. But Trump’s style has always been to break everyone down into winners and losers. In his binary world view, you're either one or the other. Maybe this works when you’re building a hotel and can bully a hungry contractor into cutting the price of cement. But it might not be so effective when the other guy has nukes just like you do — as well as big, powerful friends like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin to prop him up.

As a Trump critic, I’m happy to give him credit for pursuing peace in a dangerous corner of the world. He has dialed down the rhetoric in recent months — no more of this “rocket man” stuff — and for a president for whom the behavioral bar is laughably low, I guess that’s progress. But North Korea has just confirmed the wisdom of holding off on that peace prize.

Either one way or another quite obvious that Russia China North Korea and Iran can jointly craft a clever package of Nuclear Extortion against USA, and in such a scenario it is firmly caught and absolutely have no way out. USA is the world most vulnerable coward and incompetent bully, it deserve this type of ending scenario, don't be stupid to give any kindness nor mercy on them. They have to payback to countless victims in this world, they owed huge amount of blood debts and over very long time. Pay Day!
