Stock market extends record run as investors bet on more to come

ANOTHER trading record toppled in the Thai stock market yesterday when the benchmark index pushed deeper past 1,800 points, and investors have expressed confidence it will hit 1,900 by the end of the year.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index closed at 1,802.80 yesterday, up 7.88 points from Wednesday, with a trading value of Bt86.82 billion.
However, foreign investors and institutions made net sales of Bt1.14 billion and Bt1.64 billion, respectively. In contrast, proprietary and individuals recorded net purchases of Bt1.64 billion and Bt1.13 billion, respectively.
Isara Ordeedolchest, senior vice president for SCB Securities, said the SET Index had made corrections on its approach to 1,800 points, and any pullbacks were likely to be short term amid a bright long-term outlook.
In the short term, the SET Index could drop to 1,740 points as a result of market corrections on any sell-down by long-term funds, but he expressed confidence about a 2018 target of 1,900 points.
“The Thai stock market is not a bubble, despite the fact that it is trading at two times above the normal level, as the Thai economy is expanding with recoveries in both domestic consumption and external factors,” Isara said.
A stock market bubble occurs when demand for shares drives their prices and the index to levels beyond any accurate or rational reflection of their actual worth.
Given that the US economy is showing consistent growth with an acceleration in inflation expectations, the federal funds rate - the US benchmark rate – is expected to rise four times this year against market expectation of three times, Isara said. The European economy is recovering, while Japanese consumption expanded better than expected.
However, it is worth to keeping an eye on China, where the economy is slowing down under the direction of the government’s March policy announcement. If the country adopts more monetary tightening, the global economy and Thailand could be affected.
Thailand's economic growth is projected at 4 per cent on the back of consistent export expansion and recovery in domestic consumption and public investment. One concern is over the country's general election, which has been promised by the government for no later than early 2019.
Meanwhile, there remain concerns over apparent bubbles in stock markets across the world.
Isara said that a bubble would likely occur first in bond markets and this impact could be felt later in the stock markets.
Even though it is possible for the US stock market to make a 10 per cent correction, he believed such a sell-down would not affect the Thai stock market, given its strength with forward price to earnings ratio of 14-16 times.
Asia Plus Securities expected the Thai stock market's corrections to continue on pressure from blue chip reversals and the SET Index could stay below 1,800 points for a period.
However, ICT and energy groups have become resilient against the market corrections.
Foreign investors switched to net sellers of stocks in the region after a nine-day net buying streak, with net sales of US$493 million. Most of the foreign sales were centralised in stock markets in East Asia.
Thailand faced net foreign sale of stocks worth about US$135 million, or Bt4.4 billion.
The currency keeps rising, up another three-tenths of a point on Thursday and now at its highest value since the coup. Here's the background.
Foreign funds drive baht
Exporters continue to fret over currency

Year-to-date net foreign inflows into Thai bonds have reached 47 billion baht, with foreign investors viewing Thailand as a destination to park their funds.
Some have fingered the movement as the source of the baht's strengthening value.
The baht rose 0.3% Thursday to a nearly 3½-year high of 32.02 against the US dollar. The baht is the year-to-date best-performing currency in Asia, appreciating 1.75%.
Early Friday, currency dealers in New York quoted the baht at 31.99 per dollar in trades of $1 million or more.
The strong baht has caused heartburn among exporters, with the Thai National Shippers' Council set to discuss the issue with the Bank of Thailand Friday.
Tada: Thai bond market an attractive destination
Foreigners are probably taking a wait-and-see attitude before the Federal Open Market Committee's meeting at the end of this month, with the minutes set to be released in February, said Ariya Tiranaprakit, executive vice-president of the Thai Bond Market Association (TBMA).
Net foreign outflows in the Thai equity market are worth 8.4 billion baht this year, the TBMA said.
Ms Ariya said foreign inflows parked in short-term bonds are valued at 27 billion baht, while long-term bonds total 20 billion.
Foreign funds moving into Thai bonds are uncertain because these inflows might turn into outflows if Thailand's inflation picks up or there is an increase in the US Treasury yield, she said.
"This is a time when foreign investors are parking their money in emerging markets, and the Thai bond market is an attractive [destination] because there is a good return and the economy is picking up," said TBMA president Tada Phutthitada.
The TBMA expects domestic inflation to remain low, while the benchmark interest rate is projected to stay unchanged at 1.5% throughout the year.
The long-term US yield curve will gradually pick up, but occasional dips in the US bond market are expected, Mr Tada said.
"In the past, when the US economy recovered, dips sometimes occurred in the US bond market because of the significant sale of bonds," he said. "But the possibility of a crash in the US bond market is minimal, as the US Federal Reserve's balance sheet reduction will be gradual."
Such a scenario repeating itself in Thailand's long-term bonds is unlikely because financial institutions and insurance firms have a surplus of liquidity, Mr Tada said, adding that the country also has a huge number of local players investing in foreign investment funds (FIFs).
"The size of outstanding investment in FIFs is 1.1 trillion baht -- larger than the net foreign inflows into Thai bonds," he said. "It is more worthwhile keeping a close eye on FIF movements than foreign inflows."
Foreign investors increased their holdings in Thai bonds to 223 billion baht in 2017.
Some 76% of those holdings were long-term bonds and the rest went to short-term debt instruments.
